TMX Group CEO Addresses the Economic Club

May 27, 2014

May 27, 2014 (TORONTO) - Thomas Kloet, Chief Executive Offer, TMX Group, spoke this afternoon at the Economic Club of Ottawa. In the speech, titled Show Me the Money - An Exploration of Capital Raising in Canada, Mr. Kloet discussed the capital ecosystem in Canada and how its vibrancy and diversity are critical to the country's future success.

Mr. Kloet noted that in addition to the 3,900 issuers on Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange, there are more than 1.1 million private small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) striving to succeed: "What they need to succeed is capital, which is the lifeblood of a growing company... There needs to be an effective array of choice for companies so that they can find the method of raising capital that best fits their evolving needs."

Critical to the success of their financing activities is investor confidence, both in the individual stories the companies tell and in the platform on which those transactions occur, whether it's on crowdfunding sites, exempt markets or stock exchanges. Mr. Kloet added: "Investor confidence is the cornerstone of financing small businesses. It is essential to find the right balance for companies and for investors so that the needs of both are met - companies are able to access the capital they need and investors gain access to unique investment opportunities."

Mr. Kloet concluded by underscoring the enormous employment and economic impact of Canadian SMEs and how critical it is for them to raise the money they need to succeed and grow: "It is vital that we serve them in any way we can. TMX Group has a long history of helping Canadian public companies, both small and large, access capital. But it can't be just us. I think it is a shared responsibility. And a shared opportunity that simply can't be ignored."
